- Put plastic film on your windows. If you have older windows, adding a layer of plastic film to the inside of them can help keep your heat in and the cold out. You can get this in kits at the hardware store and apply it yourself.
- Cover the cracks. Even in newer homes, air can escape from the smallest cracks around your windows and doors. Fill these in with caulk or make draft snakes to lie under your doors.
- Use space heaters. These can be cheaper to operate than your home furnace. Keep your furnace on a setting high enough to keep the pipes from freezing, then use space heaters to warm only the spaces you’re in. This is especially useful if you work from home in your office. Heat the office and not the entire house to save.
- Use your gas fireplace. While gas fireplaces won’t heat your entire home, most of them can effectively heat a smaller space. If you spend a lot of time downstairs, let your fireplace heat you rather than your furnace.
